WHO I AM   |   WHAT I DO

As you begin to study how to design with light, it is important that you understand what lighting design is, as well as what it is not. Lighting design is a process and a craft for creating an artistic result. While the lighting design first of all allows the audience to see the stage, it is more than an excercice in illumination. The Lighting Designer uses light to achieve five primary goals.

  • To influence the audiences perception and understanding of what they are seeing.
  • To selectively illuminate the stage.
  • To sclupt, mold, and model actors, settings, and costumes.
  • To create an environnemental atmosphere that is supportive of the plays production concept.
  • To create the creative interpretation of the the script that will unify the artistic vision of The production design team.

To achieve these goals the lighting designer uses the tools of lighting design to create a designThat works to support the production concept.

Any creative art, compromises in equal parts inspiration and craft. Inspiration in this case refers. To the creative element, the process used to create a conceptual image that the artist sees In his mind. Craft refers to a mastery of the tools and the technique used to re-create the conceptual image in physical form.

The Lighting Designer uses process to develop an understanding of how the lighting should look for a Production and uses craft to re-create those images in, hopefully, an arful manner.
